After Biathlon Scandal: Ex-Germany Coach Has New Job!
Former German biathlon coach Uros Velepec is not just watching the Olympic season from the sidelines. The Slovenian is taking on the role of head coach for the Polish biathlon team, marking a new chapter in his career after a brief stint with the DSV.
Just a few months post his resignation from the German team, Uros Velepec has accepted a new challenge. The 57-year-old has confirmed his new position with the Polish federation, following rumors of his impending appointment.
Velepec announced his departure from the DSV after the Biathlon World Championships at the end of February, where the season's performance did not meet expectations. He acknowledged the need for the Polish team to enhance their competitiveness, especially in the men’s division.
In his statement, he expressed motivation, stating, “I see potential in the team. It won’t be easy, as it’s a long process, but we’re aiming to step out of the shadows and show that Poland can also excel.”
Velepec officially starts his new role on May 1st, with ambitions to catch up on the developments the athletes have missed in recent years. He said, "Our athletes were not necessarily better in the past; others have progressed while we have stagnated. Now is a good time to change that."
Biathlon in Poland has primarily been competitive in women's events, but the hope is that Velepec's guidance can lead to significant improvements in the men's side as well.
The German coach highlighted that new strategies and dedication would be essential to raise the standard of Polish biathlon and to inspire the athletes to achieve greater heights on the global stage.
He added, “After leaving Germany, I received numerous offers even in an Olympic year, which was surprising. I expected to take a year off.”
