Biathlon: Vebjørn Sørum turns to Drammen’s “miracle man” Tom Skjønnhaug to fix back problems

Norwegian biathlete Vebjørn Sørum, 27, feared his recurring back problems might end his career after a difficult start to the season that included withdrawing from the mass start in the Geilo opener when his back locked up. Seeking a solution, he travelled to Drammen to work with 79‑year‑old Tom Skjønnhaug, a renowned deep‑tissue massage therapist often dubbed the “miracle man” by Norwegian media for his work with elite athletes.

Over the last two weeks, Sørum has visited Skjønnhaug every morning for intense, no‑nonsense treatment targeting multiple muscle groups. Imaging and physical assessments indicated weakness in the hip flexor was likely triggering his back issues. When Sørum first arrived, he could hardly raise his leg while seated; after daily sessions he can now lift his knee nearly to his chest. He says he’s learned practical activation, mobility drills, and self‑massage techniques to manage the problem.

Skjønnhaug, who has previously treated stars such as Antonio Nusa, Petter Northug, Thor Hushovd, Edvald Boasson Hagen and high jump world record holder Javier Sotomayor, stresses that his method is tough but straightforward deep work on underused tissues. Sørum calls it “an honest day’s work,” adding that the progress has restored his belief in the future.

Teammates have taken note. “We know the miracle man well. I think it’s very smart of Vebjørn to go to him,” said Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen. Martin Uldal added he hopes Sørum’s back will be ready for Hochfilzen.

Sørum plans to return to the World Cup on December 12, hoping a healthier back will help him contend for a place on Norway’s 2026 Olympic team. He jokes that Skjønnhaug has definitely gained a new regular client.
