Biathlon: Campbell Wright criticizes European rivals for “fake professionalism”

U.S. biathlete Campbell Wright has sparked debate after criticizing what he calls “fake professionalism” among many European rivals. Speaking on the podcast “Skirious problems,” the 23‑year‑old suggested that some athletes become surly and withdraw into themselves an hour before the start, believing it improves performance. He questioned whether such behavior is actually healthy, noting that some competitors get so focused they stop talking to others — and even become physically sick — yet are then encouraged by coaches to keep repeating the routine.
Wright told NRK that he knows making such comments while mostly racing in Europe paints a “target on his back,” but he feels athletes should remember how privileged they are. He added that he has sometimes felt shunned for joking around pre‑race, and bluntly said some Europeans have “a stick up their bum.” He did, however, describe several Norwegian athletes as relaxed and fun, and said being among the best should also allow athletes to enjoy the experience.
Reactions were mixed within the biathlon community. Norway’s Isak Leknes Frey pushed back, saying people prepare differently and he prefers his own bubble. Teammates Vebjørn Sørum and Sturla Holm Lægreid partly agreed with Wright, arguing that many in Europe — including some in Norway — are a bit too stiff and could still perform well while keeping it light before the start. France’s Fabien Claude said everyone’s different and that his own approach is to focus inward, emphasizing respect and fair play above all.
Wright’s comments come after a breakout season in which he won silver medals in the sprint and pursuit at the Lenzerheide World Championships, finishing behind Johannes Thingnes Bø. The discussion also unfolded around the Munich “Loop One” exhibition event, where several of the interviewed athletes were competing.
