Ella Halvarsson’s debut season in biathlon was a major success. She earned a World Championship silver medal and finished second twice on the Biathlon World Cup circuit, marking a breakout year.
During SVT’s Vinterstudion broadcast after the women’s sprint in Idre, the 26‑year‑old was surprised on live TV with the announcement that she has been nominated for Newcomer of the Year at the Swedish Sports Gala (Idrottsgalan) on January 21, 2026.
“I’ve watched Idrottsgalan many times and never been there. It feels like what I’ve done has meant something. It’s really big,” Halvarsson said with a big smile. “I’m surprised. Swedish sport has gone well – many are strong and have done great – so the competition is tough.”
Besides Halvarsson, the nominees in the newcomer category are Alba Boström (powerlifting), Engla Nilsson (athletics), and the beach volleyball pair Jacob Hölting Nilsson/Elmer Andersson.
The segment was part of SVT’s coverage from Idre, coming a day after Elvira Öberg won the women’s sprint in dominant fashion.
