German biathlon World Cup roster finalized for Östersund opener

The final decisions are made: Marlene Fichtner and Anna Weidel have claimed the last two available spots and complete Germany’s women’s roster for the Biathlon World Cup season opener in Östersund.
According to the German Ski Association, Fichtner secured her place by winning the internal Ruhpolding sprint and topping the overall qualification standings. Weidel received her start after a coaches’ decision. Sophia Schneider, a two‑time world championship relay medalist, will begin her season in the IBU Cup following a difficult preparation and health issues.
Already assured of selection were overall World Cup winner Franziska Preuß, Selina Grotian, Vanessa Voigt, Julia Tannheimer and Janina Hettich‑Walz. For Hettich‑Walz, 29, this marks a comeback season after a year of maternity leave. Strong results—a shortened individual and sprint title at the German Championships in September and convincing performances in the international races at Idre Fjäll—meant she was exempted from qualification, with coaches awarding her a spot in advance.
The World Cup season opens in Östersund on 29 November with the women’s relay, followed by the men’s team relay later that day (live on ARD). On the men’s side, alongside pre‑selected Justus Strelow and Philipp Nawrath, Lucas Fratzscher, Simon Kaiser, Philipp Horn and Danilo Riethmüller were nominated for the opener.
