Norwegian biathlete Sivert Guttorm Bakken dies at 27

Norway’s biathlon community is mourning the death of Sivert Guttorm Bakken, who has passed away at the age of 27.
According to the Norwegian Biathlon Association, Bakken was found dead in his hotel room in Lavazè, Italy. The cause of death has not been determined. Just a week earlier, he had raced in the Biathlon World Cup in Annecy, France, where he placed fifth in the sprint.
“It is, of course, a terrible message to receive. Sivert was a fantastic athlete and a fantastic person whom the entire biathlon community was incredibly fond of,” said Emilie Nordskar, acting secretary‑general of the Norwegian Biathlon Association, to NTB.
Bakken’s recent results and continued presence on the World Cup circuit underscored his status as an active international competitor. News of his passing has sent shockwaves through Norwegian and international biathlon circles.
