Siegfried Mazet will step down as coach of Norway’s biathlon national team after the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano-Cortina, the Norwegian Biathlon Association announced on Friday.
“I’ve had a fantastic time with the Norwegian team and want to say thank you. It’s been incredible here. But after almost 10 years, I want to pass the baton,” Mazet said, adding that he will complete the coming Olympic season before moving back to France.
Mazet arrived in Norway in 2016 and has been a key figure behind the team’s success, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to build strong relationships with athletes and staff. His work has been widely credited with elevating both athletes and coaches to a new level.
General secretary Morten Djupvik lauded Mazet as “a pillar of Norwegian biathlon,” saying his imprint will remain visible for years. Head coach Per Arne Botnan also praised Mazet’s precision and the standard he set for being the best in the world. The federation noted it had been aware of French leave regulations and that the decision did not come as a surprise.
The announcement comes in the wake of a dominant 2024–25 season for Norway, including multiple world championship highlights referenced by the outlet, underscoring the era of success in which Mazet played a central part.
