The forensic examinations of the late Sivert Guttorm Bakken will not provide answers until well into 2026.

An autopsy was carried out over the weekend following the tragic death of Bakken on Christmas Eve. On Tuesday it became clear that the forensic investigations will not be completed until March 2026.

“We had hoped the family would have received some answers now, but they will not come until several months from now,” the family’s counsel, Bernt Heiberg of Elden law firm, said in a press release.

The law firm also states that Italian police are investigating the case as a suspicious death — which does not necessarily imply that a criminal act is suspected, only that the cause of death is not yet known.

The Italian public prosecutor has given the forensic doctors a deadline of 7 March to finalise their examinations and issue a report.

Bakken’s body will be transported back to Norway in the coming days so the family can plan the funeral. It is not yet decided when or where the funeral will take place.
