Anger over unusual World Cup scenes: “It’s dangerous,” say athletes

A number of inexperienced athletes were allowed to start at the Cross‑Country World Cup in Trondheim, leading to unusual and controversial scenes on the course.

According to the article, the International Ski Federation (FIS) permits less‑experienced skiers to compete during the first three World Cup weekends before Christmas to help traditionally weaker nations earn Olympic qualification. One of those entrants was 48‑year‑old Edward Limbaga from the Philippines, who, per NRK, had only been on skis for the first time four weeks earlier.

The presence of such inexperienced skiers drew sharp criticism from established athletes. Austria’s Mika Vermeulen told NRK that it is dangerous for faster stars when much slower, less‑skilled skiers are on the same course. SVT Sport expert Anders Blomquist said he understands the goal of broadening the sport, but believes there should be better alternatives than putting these athletes directly into World Cup races.

Limbaga finished last in the race, 111th, 23 minutes and 29 seconds behind the winner, Einar Hedegart. The debate now centers on whether FIS’s current early‑season qualification approach balances inclusivity and safety at the elite World Cup level.
