Decision: FIS to introduce sex testing in skiing — first at 2027 Falun World Championships

The International Ski Federation (FIS) has confirmed it will introduce a new eligibility policy that includes sex testing across its sports. The policy will come into force in July 2026 and will be applied for the first time at the Nordic World Championships in Falun in 2027. After the championship trial, the policy will be implemented in FIS World Cup competitions starting with the 2027/28 season.

FIS stated that the policy is intended to streamline eligibility decisions regarding participation in women’s and men’s categories. Tests will be performed using saliva or blood samples. The measure will cover all FIS‑governed disciplines, including cross‑country skiing, ski jumping, and alpine skiing.

The announcement follows confusion in September, when FIS first indicated plans to introduce sex testing but later clarified the timing due to a communication error. With the new eligibility framework now agreed, FIS has set a clear timetable: initial application at the 2027 World Championships before rolling out to the World Cup circuit.

SVT’s alpine expert Pernilla Wiberg previously welcomed the decision, calling the testing approach relatively quick and acceptable for all parties. Athlete reactions have been mixed; earlier SVT coverage featured star skiers expressing discomfort and uncertainty about the implications.

The Falun 2027 Nordic World Championships are scheduled for 24 February–7 March 2027.
