Norwegian cross-country skier Helene Marie Fossesholm has retired at the age of 24, explaining on Instagram that she no longer has the motivation to continue at the top level.

“I kept hoping this feeling would pass and my motivation would return. I tried to focus on the positives and spoke publicly as if my motivation was high. Unfortunately, time hasn’t helped. I’ve increasingly felt drawn to other things,” she wrote.

Fossesholm’s career highlights include World Championship relay gold in Oberstdorf in 2021. Long considered one of Norway’s brightest talents, she was frequently mentioned as a potential successor to legends Therese Johaug and Marit Bjørgen, especially after standout results at the Junior World Championships in Lahti and Oberwiesenthal.

Reacting to the news, Johaug—now a cross-country expert for NRK—said she was surprised but fully respected the decision. “It’s hugely admirable to follow your heart, your instincts and what makes you happy. That’s the most important thing,” Johaug said.

Beyond her senior worlds relay title, Fossesholm earned three golds and two silvers at junior worlds and reached the World Cup podium twice. Despite her early retirement, many in Norway still regard her as one of the nation’s great natural talents in the sport.
