Finland’s cross-country skiing star Jasmin Kähärä reported on social media that her Lavazè training camp in Italy ended unexpectedly with a hospital visit in Bolzano. She underwent surgery in the abdominal area and has since begun recovery.

Kähärä thanked the hospital for its prompt and effective care. She noted that experiencing such an incident abroad was frightening, but the European Health Insurance Card ensured immediate access to treatment. After a few days in hospital, she was discharged and returned safely to Finland.

According to Kähärä, the incident was something she could never have anticipated: “There was a lot of bad luck involved, but also good luck, and everything ended well.” Normal training will have to wait a bit longer, but she has already resumed light activity and feels recovery is progressing well. She added that, although this detour delays her approach to the start of the season, she has a solid block of training behind her.

Kähärä thanked her teammates at Lavazè and the Finnish national team doctor, Maarit Valtonen, for their support. The Finnish Ski Association also confirmed that Kähärä had abdominal surgery and was discharged after a few days of care to return to Finland. She said she will not comment further on the matter.

Kähärä, 25, competed at the Trondheim World Championships last winter, placing 14th in the sprint. In the World Cup she has seven individual top‑10 finishes, and her career‑best result came in January 2025 at the Tour de Ski stage in Val di Fiemme, where she finished fourth in the classic sprint.
