American overall World Cup holder Jessie Diggins won the women’s 20 km skiathlon in Trondheim, Norway, on Saturday.
Diggins rode a tactically discreet race for much of the distance, then attacked on the last climb of the circuit to secure her 28th World Cup win. She edged Norway’s Heidi Weng by one second, while Sweden’s Ebba Andersson, a key aggressor throughout, took third at 2.3 seconds.
Andersson had tried repeatedly to break away, but despite her accelerations the main favorites — including overall leader Frida Karlsson — remained in contact into the closing kilometers. Sprint star Jonna Sundling was the notable exception among the contenders in the finale. Diggins capitalized on the decisive moment to outkick the field.
France’s Delphine Claudel, who had returned to good form last week in Ruka, did not start the race. On medical staff advice, the French women’s team leader withdrew due to pain that appeared on Friday.
