Johannes Høsflot Klæbo historic – wins his fifth overall Tour de Ski

No one could threaten the Norwegian giant. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo has taken his fifth overall victory in the Tour de Ski — a milestone that now makes him the event's most successful athlete.

Before the decisive final stage Klæbo held a lead of 1 minute 23 seconds over Lars Heggen in the overall standings. With the climb up Alpe Cermis ahead, it would take a major effort from anyone to push the Norwegian off the top.

Even though Klæbo placed 12th on the climb, it was more than enough: he won the overall by 30 seconds ahead of Mattis Stenhagen, who was the fastest on the final stage. In doing so Klæbo passed Dario Cologna, Therese Johaug and Justyna Kowalczyk on the list of most Tour de Ski overall wins.

“I was pretty sure my time before the stage would be enough. I felt I had good control, then it was really just about not doing anything stupid,” Klæbo told SVT Sport.

Stage result highlights

Second on the climb was France’s Jules Lapierre and third was Norwegian Emil Iversen.

Swedish riders

Best Swede was William Poromaa, who finished 17th on the stage.

“It was probably a bit nastier this year. It hurts — I was worse today. But I felt I wanted to get to the finish,” Poromaa said; he had injured a rib earlier in the week and was uncertain before today’s stage.

Edvin Anger had a chance to chase the podium but struggled on the climb and crossed the line in 36th. That meant Anger dropped in the overall standings from sixth to twelfth.

“Very tough. I was comfortable up until the climb but then it got heavy,” he said. “I’m not happy with the total placing. I wanted much more.”
