Maja Dahlqvist on the podium after a dramatic sprint final

Sweden’s Maja Dahlqvist claimed a podium finish in the opening stage of the Tour de Ski, taking third place in the women’s freestyle sprint in Toblach on Sunday afternoon.

The final turned dramatic almost immediately when Sweden’s other finalist, Johanna Hagström—who had been the fastest in qualification—fell just a few meters after the start and was effectively out of contention for victory or the podium.

Norway’s Kristine Stavås Skistad won the race, with Germany’s Coletta Rydzek in second place and Dahlqvist in third.
