Maja Dahlqvist clinches sprint cup in Tour de Ski

Maja Dahlqvist took the lead on the final stage of the Tour de Ski and fought for sprint points. That was enough to win the sprint classification.

“I know that uphill I don’t have a chance against these [climbers],” Dahlqvist told SVT Sport.

In the final stage of Tour de Ski — the climb up Alpe Cermis — Maja Dahlqvist spent a long time at the front of the group.

The Swede was first past the 6.8-kilometre mark and thereby collected important points that were enough to secure the sprint cup victory.

After that she eased the pace and eventually finished 30th on the climb.

“I know that uphill I don’t have a chance against these. I went for the sprint, so I’m very pleased with the day,” Dahlqvist told SVT Sport.

The sprint-cup victory comes with prize money of about SEK 64,000.

“I probably wouldn’t have been as motivated if it was only for the honour. It’s a long tour so it’s nice to get something out of it,” she said.

"Maja was in a class of her own"

Johanna Hagström also chose to go for sprint points on the climb.

“The goal was to try to take some sprint points today. Maja was in a class of her own but I fought for second place,” Hagström said.

Hagström put in a strong acceleration on the hill but could not get past Switzerland’s Nadine Fähndrich. Right after passing the points marker the Swede paused.

“I felt I had to take a few breaths and then continue up the hill.”

Still, that was enough for third place in the sprint classification — worth about SEK 40,000 in prize money.

The last stage was won by Norway’s Karoline Simpson-Larsen, while Jessie Diggins won the overall Tour de Ski title.
