Matt Smith Embraces Cross-Country Skiing, Aiming for World Championships and Olympics

Matt Smith, dubbed the "ski influencer" from Africa, has turned his life around after moving to Norway not once but twice – first for love and now for his newfound passion: cross-country skiing. At 34, Smith is far from your typical beginner; having first worn a pair of skis just two years ago, he has already committed to training at Norway’s iconic national facility, Holmenkollen.
Smith’s unique journey is showcased by his custom-designed, green and yellow ski suit emblazoned with the South African flag and text. The striking design has made him a notable figure on the slopes, drawing smiles and greetings from fellow skiers as he navigates the trails in his new adopted sport. His enthusiastic (if halting) Norwegian greetings have become part of his charm.
In the days leading up to the World Championships – with the opening ceremony scheduled on February 26 in Trondheim – Smith is preparing for what he describes as "the race of his life." He is set to compete in qualifying events that, although lacking the presence of Norwegian stars, serve as a stepping stone for athletes from smaller skiing nations. Among these competitors, he is one of only two South Africans registered as active cross-country skiers with FIS.
Smith’s ambition is not limited to the World Championships; he dreams of taking part in the Olympics just one year from now. His journey, however, has not been without challenges. Transitioning to a predominantly Scandinavian sport in which he had little prior exposure, the learning curve has been steep. Nonetheless, he has found not only training partners but also a supportive international network. Through the creation of a WhatsApp group comprising athletes from 47 nations – including friends from India, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago – Smith and his peers are forging a multicultural team spirit under the banner of "Team Endure."
In addition to his personal training, Smith’s story is buoyed by the encouragement he receives from Norwegian cross-country skiing experts like Fredrik Aukland. Although Aukland points out that Smith lacks the years of ingrained ski feeling that many native athletes have, he admires his determination and the way he uses social media to promote the sport globally.
Beyond the competitions, Smith’s integration into Norwegian culture is evident. He has embraced local traditions – from enjoying a waffle topped with rømme, brunost, and jam to making new friends along the ski tracks – and sees skiing as a pathway to feeling truly at home in Norway. His journey from a novice to an aspiring Olympian is a testament to the unifying power of sport.
As the World Championships approach, Smith is set to tackle his qualifying races with the hope that a strong performance will earn him a coveted spot at the Olympics. His story of determination, cultural integration, and international camaraderie is inspiring a new wave of athletes from non-traditional skiing nations to take up the sport.
