Sweden’s rising cross‑country star Alvar Myhlback opened his World Cup season with a personal best in Ruka, Finland. The 19‑year‑old finished 16th in the men’s 10 km classic, roughly half a minute shy of the podium.
Myhlback, who made headlines last winter by becoming the youngest ever winner of the Vasaloppet, chose to race the opening weekend and delivered steady skiing for his top World Cup placing to date.
Edvin Anger was the best Swede in the race, placing ninth. The victory went to Norway’s Martin Løwström Nyenget, who beat compatriot and favorite Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. Austria’s Mika Vermeulen produced a surprise to claim third place.
The performance underscores Myhlback’s progression at the international level as the World Cup season gets underway in Ruka.
