New Record for Gianfranco Paglia in Sitting Cross-Country Skiing
On December 6, 2024, Colonel Gianfranco Paglia shattered the record for sitting cross-country skiing by covering a distance of 7.62 kilometers in one hour at Armentarola, Corvara in Badia, improving on last year’s record of 5.7 kilometers. This achievement is part of the 'Ora no limits' initiative supported by the Italian military’s Paralympic Sports Group.
Paglia, who became a tetraplegic after being injured in Somalia in 1993, expressed joy and pride in his accomplishment, stating, "I didn’t think I could do it, and I’m happy I didn’t let this fantastic support down." He further emphasized that military personnel are accustomed to overcoming challenges, whether in a wheelchair or on foot.
The event also included participation from Italy's Minister of Sport, Andrea Abodi, who completed the race despite some falls and reflecting on the unique experience, noting the distinction between exhausting types of fatigue — highlighting that the physical exertion of participation is fulfilling and rejuvenating.
This initiative strives to demonstrate that disabilities are not barriers and that perseverance can lead to extraordinary achievements in sports.
Looking Ahead
Paglia is preparing for another significant challenge: a non-stop two-hour race during the World Cup stop in Val di Fiemme set for January 30 to February 1, 2025. His steadfast commitment to the cause reflects the underlying message of the project: "Disability is not a limit" and "the military doesn't leave anyone behind."
