Ski Federation Still Has Significant Gaps to Fill – Athlete Requests Partially Met
Originally published in Yle on April 06, 2025
The financial situation of the Ski Federation is in much better shape compared to last year, yet there is still much to be done. The situation regarding training camps is clearer now than it was at the same time last year. The Finnish Ski Federation's Executive Director, Marleena Valtasola, states that the overall finances have improved and that they have a good understanding of the upcoming season's budgets. This allows them to guarantee basic training for athletes. However, not every athlete's wish can be fulfilled fully.
Athletes have expressed dissatisfaction in the past year regarding the lack of summer training sessions high in the mountains. The main coach, Teemu Pasanen, acknowledges that while there will be some high-altitude training this summer, it will not be extensive. He emphasizes the importance of resource allocation to meet athletes' needs effectively.
Valtasola anticipates seeing more coaches in place for ski jumping and Nordic combined, as it is imperative to promote a unified culture within training. The hiring process for a performance director is underway to oversee high-level coaching across three disciplines. This role will involve ensuring a cohesive operational culture and paving the way for the planned World Championships in Lahti in 2029.
