Kilpisjärvi's Summer Skiing Festival Thrills Winter Sports Fans

Every summer, a unique tradition unfolds in Kilpisjärvi as enthusiasts embark on a thrilling 35-meter downhill ski adventure after a two-kilometer uphill trek to an altitude of 700 meters. For Samuli Ollila, a passionate skier from Sodankylä, this annual Midsummer skiing event has become a cherished family affair.
Having secured victory 17 times in previous years, Ollila once again claimed the top spot this year, conquering the course in just over 12 seconds. His family's enthusiasm for skiing shines through, with his two sons, Toivo, aged 9, and Simeon, aged 6, also eager to participate in the race.
Celebrating its 79th edition, the event faced unique challenges this year. The iconic ski track on the northern slope of Mount Saana was notably shorter due to a sparse snowfall this past winter and an unusually early summer. Yet, the breathtaking views of the Norwegian and Swedish mountains provided a stunning backdrop that overshadowed the reduced course length.
Antti Ohenoja, the chairman of Saana-Veikot, pointed out the unusual conditions, observing that summer seemed to be two weeks ahead of schedule, with flora in full bloom reminiscent of July rather than June.
Participants like Veera Vähäheikkilä and Juuso Koskensalo celebrated the festival as a refreshing alternative to the typical Midsummer festivities. Although the climb to the skiing site presented challenges, they found the atmosphere to be friendly and inclusive.
Veikko Aaltonen, a seasoned course manager, has witnessed annual variations in snow levels affecting the location of the race. Meanwhile, Seppo Illikainen from Haukipudas marked a milestone by winning his 30th race this year.
Founded by customs officer Yrjö Metsälä to offer a wholesome alternative to traditional Midsummer celebrations, the festival maintains its alcohol-free environment, aligning with the modern 'sober curious' trend.
Now expanded to three days, the festival features an array of activities, including family-friendly skiing competitions, a trail run to the summit of Mount Saana, and orienteering challenges, drawing participants from across Finland and even from abroad.
