Sweden may lose a men’s cross‑country Olympic quota spot: “Could be a problem”

Sweden risks losing one of its men’s cross‑country skiing quota places for the Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics.

According to reporting cited from Expressen, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) plans qualification changes designed to give smaller nations a better chance to qualify. Under the preliminary framework, both Sweden and Norway would be limited to sending seven male cross‑country skiers instead of eight.

Radiosporten expert Torgny Mogren describes the situation as disappointing, noting that an athlete could miss an Olympic opportunity they would otherwise have had. He also points out that the adjustment poses selection challenges for strong nations with broad depth, where competition for the final roster spots is already tight.

The change concerns quota allocations for the men’s cross‑country team only, and comes as teams begin planning toward the 2026 Winter Games in Italy.
