Cross‑country: Swedes miss the podium — Jessie Diggins wins Tour de Ski for third time

Ebba Andersson fought for a podium place in the final stage of the Tour de Ski but lost speed on the Alpe Cermis climb and finished fifth in the stage. That result left her fifth in the overall standings, ten seconds behind Norway's Heidi Weng in third.
Jessie Diggins finished second on the final climb and with that secured her third overall Tour de Ski title.
"I am just so grateful," Diggins told SVT Sport after the race.
Andersson went into the last stage with only 50 seconds to the podium in the overall standings. She skied well for much of the race and for a long time looked like a candidate for a top‑three finish, but she ran out of the final reserves on the climb and crossed the line fifth in the stage.
"I knew the possibilities were there. But I didn't quite have the last energy to complete it," Andersson said to SVT Sport.
Despite missing the podium in the final stage, Andersson gained some places in the overall Tour de Ski ranking: she was eighth before the last stage and finished fifth overall.
Norwegian Karoline Simpson‑Larsen was the fastest in the final stage. Jessie Diggins came second on the climb and thereby claimed her third Tour de Ski overall victory. "I'm so grateful to my team. It takes a lot of work from everyone," Diggins said to SVT Sport.
Third on the final climb — and third overall — was Norway's Heidi Weng.
All Swedish skiers off the podium
Ebba Andersson was the best Swedish skier in the final stage. She was followed by Moa Lundgren in 13th and Moa Ilar in 26th.
"It feels heavy. I'm climbing with what I've got today but it wasn't enough," Ilar said. Ilar had been well placed going into the stage and was third overall before the climb, but she dropped to eighth after the Alpe Cermis finish.
Maja Dahlqvist finished 30th on the climb but collected important sprint points and won the tour's sprint cup.
Märta Rosenberg, meanwhile, abandoned the final stage after an early fall. She crashed in the sprint loop, fell far behind the leaders before the climb and chose to withdraw before attempting the Alpe Cermis ascent.
