Trondheim mayor Kent Ranum has reacted strongly to news that Russian athletes may be able to compete at international ski events again, including the World Cup in Granåsen this coming weekend. The reaction follows a decision that the Russian Ski Federation won its appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), opening the door for Russian participation in international races.

Ranum called the decision disappointing and said Russian athletes should be kept out of international competitions as long as the war in Ukraine continues. He reiterated that he had the same view before the World Championships and that his stance has not changed. While acknowledging that laws and regulations would dictate how any arrivals must be received, he said he hopes they do not come.

Lasse Ottesen, race director for Nordic combined, said that from a practical standpoint Trondheim is likely too soon because the first competition day is already on Friday and entries are normally required weeks in advance. He added that organizers may need to be more flexible given the late timing of the ruling, but even so Trondheim would be a hectic turnaround for any Russian athletes wishing to take part.

Russian national team head coach Egor Sorin, quoted by Russian outlet Championat, joked that “Trondheim is an option—absolutely. We’re coming by helicopter,” before noting they are awaiting guidance from FIS on next steps. Veronika Stepanova told NRK she will not compete in Trondheim.

Event manager Daniel Myrmæl Helgestad said the Trondheim organizers will follow whatever FIS and the Norwegian Ski Federation decide, and their job is to deliver good races on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for those on the start list.
