Kerttu Niskanen helped Vilma Ryyty secure silver at the Finnish Championships while significantly impacting Vilma Nissinen's competition performance during the event. Niskanen's early lead allowed her to slow down and pull Ryyty along with her towards a podium finish.
Niskanen maintained a significant gap ahead of Nissinen throughout the race, and upon catching Ryyty, she offered assistance to ensure Ryyty gained a medal. "When I caught up with Vilma, I knew she was fighting hard for a medal, so I decided to let her benefit from my pace," Niskanen explained.
However, this collaborative strategy impacted Nissinen negatively as she saw her own chances slip away. As they entered the final stretch, Nissinen was informed Niskanen was drawing closer, which dashed her hopes for a medal after she was briefly neck and neck with Ryyty.
Post-race, Nissinen reflected on her missed opportunity, feeling frustration but acknowledging the strong competition she faced, including throughout the season where she consistently performed well.
