It was a packed Sunday of World Cup action in winter sports.
Cross-country skiing – Davos (10 km freestyle) - Women: Finland’s Vilma Ryytty delivered a career-best World Cup result by placing ninth in the 10 km individual start freestyle. Norway’s Karoline Simpson-Larsen took the win. Ryytty said she was happy but felt she lost a little time in icy corners, noting the 37-second gap to the winner was her smallest ever over 10 km. - Men: Norway swept the top five, with Einar Hedegart winning. Finland’s Arsi Ruuskanen was the best Finn in 11th. Illness kept Iivo Niskanen out.
Ski jumping – Klingenthal (HS140) - Antti Aalto was the only Finn to reach the second round and finished 22nd after jumps of 126 m and 128 m. Vilho Palosaari (40th) and Niko Kytösaho (46th) missed the cut. Slovenia’s Domen Prevc won ahead of Japan’s Ren Nikaido and Ryoyu Kobayashi.
Biathlon – Hochfilzen - Women’s 10 km pursuit: Italy’s Lisa Vittozzi shot 20/20 to win ahead of Sweden’s Anna Magnusson and Norway’s Maren Kirkeeide. Finland’s Suvi Minkkinen surged from 49th on the start to 13th with 1 penalty; Venla Lehtonen was 43rd. - Men’s relay: Norway won; Finland placed 12th.
Alpine skiing - Men’s slalom, Val d’Isère: Finland’s Eduard Hallberg was 12th; Norway’s Timon Haugan won. Jesper Pohjolainen did not finish. - Women’s super-G, St. Moritz: New Zealand’s Alice Robinson won. Finland’s Rosa Pohjolainen placed 48th; the article lists Lindsey Vonn fourth in a historical/summary mention.
Quotes - Ryytty to Yle: “Icy corners are a bit of a weakness, and when your best-ever result is coming, you don’t want to crash. I tried to push as hard as possible—maybe I lost one place there. The gap to the lead has never been this small for me in a 10 km.”
