Kombi legend Felix Gottwald produced a memorable moment for Austrian sport at the 2006 Turin Games: after finishing second on the normal hill he won individual gold on the large hill — the country’s first individual Olympic title in one of the Winter Games’ oldest disciplines. Twenty years later ex-world champion Johannes Lamparter wants to repeat the feat.
After the silver medal on the normal hill, the 24-year-old Tyrolean is counted among the very top favourites today on the large hill in Predazzo: “If I can take home silver or bronze again, I won't be angry. Gold — as Felix Gottwald already said — must happen. At a major event you also need a bit of luck.”
Lamparter’s team celebration after the Nordic combined silver medal showed how close Austria is to another big success, and commentators are treating Lamparter as a serious threat for Olympic history in the same way Gottwald once was.
