Johannes Lamparter (AUT) extended his overall lead in the Viessmann FIS Nordic Combined World Cup with victory in Sunday’s Large Hill Gundersen in Trondheim, marking his third win from the first four events of the season.
After finishing only sixth in Saturday’s Mass Start, the 2022–23 overall champion produced a strong response, winning a head‑to‑head duel with Austrian teammate Franz‑Josef Rehrl, who followed up his third place on Saturday with an excellent second.
Germany’s Julian Schmid completed the podium with a late surge, outsprinting compatriot Wendelin Thannheimer and Finland’s Ilkka Herola for third. It was Schmid’s third podium of the winter after two second places in Ruka.
Jumping phase - Rehrl led after the HS138 Large Hill with 137.5 m (143.4 pts), 12 seconds ahead of Lamparter, who jumped 133.0 m (140.4 pts). - Other notable jumps included Thannheimer’s 139.5 m, the day’s longest, and strong flights from Sora Yachi (135.5 m), Simon Mach (133.0 m), Laurent Muhlethaler (131.0 m), Marco Heinis (134.0 m), and Stefan Rettenegger (129.0 m). Defending champion Vinzenz Geiger returned from injury with 124.5 m; China’s Jiawen Zhao posted 125.5 m.
Cross‑country race (10 km) - Lamparter closed the 12‑second deficit by the end of the first 2.5 km lap. The Austrian duo collaborated to keep a ~20‑second cushion before Lamparter attacked decisively on the final uphill to win in 23:30.6, 11.6 seconds clear of Rehrl. - From the chase, Herola and Thannheimer worked together early, but Schmid, aided by Stefan Rettenegger, reduced the gap to ~30 seconds by lap three and then nipped Thannheimer and Herola in the finishing sprint for third.
Quotes - Lamparter: “Saturday was not so good but it was a perfect Sunday with a solid jump and a really good race… On the last lap I felt really good and wanted to make sure on the last uphill with a good last attack.” - Rehrl: “It was a great day… I had a good chance on this hill and I’m glad I was in the front in the jumping.” - Schmid: “I tried to go as fast as I could from the first lap… In the end I was the fastest, so it was good for me.”
