Nordic Combined Star Jørgen Graabak Plagued by Accidents: "I Was in So Much Pain That I Felt Nauseous"
Published on September 21, 2024, by NRK Sport, Jørgen Graabak, a prominent figure in Nordic combined skiing, recounts a stressful series of accidents that have hampered his preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Granåsen.
In just over three months, Graabak sustained four fractures, contributing to a tumultuous training regimen. His most recent injury, which he describes as so embarrassing that he hesitated to inform his coaches, occurred after he ignored his usual rule of not roller skiing before May. The excitement of the upcoming home World Championships seemed to drive him past his limits.
- "Right now, I am enjoying not feeling pain anywhere," Graabak smiled in Granåsen, where he hopes to compete for medals in a few months. However, the road to recovery has been far from smooth.
On April 29, during an outing on roller skis, Graabak hit a rock with his front wheel, resulting in both an elbow and hand fracture. Two weeks post the roller ski incident, he continued to experience severe pain in his elbow, prompting concerns that there was more to the injury than just a fracture.
- "We began to wonder if there was something more than just the fracture. My arm was very swollen—it looked strange for someone not having a large upper body," Graabak noted, staying in touch with the national team's doctor, Anders Heen throughout his recovery process.
Graabak is determined to return to form and perform well in front of a home crowd, despite the setbacks he has encountered.
