German Nordic combined star Vinzenz Geiger will miss the opening phase of the Olympic season after injuring his right foot during strength training. According to the German Ski Association (DSV), the double Olympic champion and overall World Cup winner from last winter sustained three bony ligament avulsions in the foot.
“Unlucky timing, but I’m already in rehab and hope to be back at the start as soon as possible,” said the 28‑year‑old from Oberstdorf. National coach Eric Frenzel added: “The good thing is it’s nothing long‑term. The injury should heal well now, and after that he can return fairly quickly. We don’t want to rush it.”
As a result, Geiger will miss the first World Cup rounds in Kuusamo (29 November–1 December) and Lillehammer (7/8 December). The Olympic Winter Games run from 6 to 22 February. Following the retirement of Norway’s Jarl Magnus Riiber, Geiger had been viewed as the preseason favorite for the overall title.
