Daniel Tschofenig explains differences between summer and winter ski jumping

Ski Jumping’s summer series, the FIS Grand Prix, is set to begin in Courchevel, with organizers and athletes emphasizing both similarities and clear differences between summer and winter ski jumping.
The discipline’s warm‑weather solution dates back to 1954, when East German coach Hans Renner introduced plastic fiber matting that, when watered, provides glide comparable to snow. Today, summer events typically use ceramic in‑run tracks with integrated sprinklers, while winter in‑runs are iced and cooled to maintain a smooth surface even in milder temperatures.
Reigning men’s FIS World Cup overall champion Daniel Tschofenig explains the athlete’s perspective on these surfaces. “You can definitely feel that the takeoff is different on a ceramic track,” he says, noting that ceramic produces more consistent conditions than ice, which can vary markedly with sun, cold, snow, or rain. “On ice, you really need to be a more complete jumper with as much experience as possible.” He adds that ceramic tracks are integral to summer training, and although the feeling differs from winter, he is comfortable on them.
Tschofenig looks forward to competing again in the Grand Prix, especially the Olympic test event in Predazzo and his home competition in Hinzenbach. He views the summer circuit as important preparation, particularly with new equipment regulations and sanctions coming into force and an increasingly packed winter calendar. The 2025 Grand Prix includes six rounds for men (five for women) and concludes in Klingenthal on October 26, with the FIS World Cup starting four weeks later in Lillehammer on November 22.
With Milano Cortina 2026 on the horizon, the summer events serve as a key step in preparation for the Olympic season, offering athletes a chance to meet rivals, test setups under evolving rules, and refine technique before winter returns.
