After four fifth-place finishes Jan Hörl finally reached the podium with second place at the New Year’s jump in Garmisch-Partenkirchen — but he felt that more could have been possible.

Hörl complained that the start gate was moved one notch shorter right before his attempt, at a moment when the tail wind strengthened. “The second jump was a weak performance. The conditions were very difficult. I somehow just got away with it, but it wasn’t entirely fair,” the 27-year-old from Salzburg said. Despite that, he was pleased with finishing second.

He also praised his younger teammates: “Great that Embacher made the podium again — he did a superb job. The youngsters push us and we have to stretch ourselves.”

The piece appears on Krone’s ski nordic section and refers to the traditional Four Hills/New Year’s competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen where weather and gate changes can heavily affect results.
