Ski jumping star Karl Geiger steps away from the World Cup — here’s why

Germany have made changes to their line‑up for the next Ski Jumping World Cup stop in Klingenthal. Karl Geiger, one of the team’s biggest names, will not compete. He has been among the jumpers most affected by the new equipment regulations this season and has struggled to find form. After scratching out a few points in Lillehammer and Ruka, his weekend in Wisła was disastrous, failing to get through qualification twice.
Head coach Stefan Horngacher decided it was the right time to pull Geiger from the World Cup to focus on training. “We have to do something. Maybe change things in training, maybe I should go back to the Continental Cup. I don’t know. We need to discuss it with the staff,” Geiger told Skijumping.pl in Wisła.
Meanwhile, Andreas Wellinger used this week for individual training and is slated to start in Klingenthal. Also set to appear on the Vogtland Arena hill are Luca Roth, Pius Paschke, and the team’s current leaders Philipp Raimund and Felix Hoffmann. “For me Klingenthal is the first big highlight of the season because the support from the fans is exceptional. Competing on Vogtland Arena in the good form I showed in Wisła will be even more enjoyable, and I can’t wait to jump again,” Raimund said.
Competition in Germany begins with Friday qualifications scheduled for 19:30.
