Polish Ski Association (PZN) president Adam Małysz reflected on the coaching change in Poland’s men’s ski jumping team following the departure of Thomas Thurnbichler at the end of the 2024/25 season. He revealed that the Austrian coach also declined an offer to lead the junior team afterward.

Małysz emphasized that Thurnbichler’s first year was excellent: Dawid Kubacki was in outstanding form and contending for the overall World Cup podium before family issues intervened, Piotr Żyła finished sixth overall and defended his world title, and Kamil Stoch was regularly among the leaders. However, Małysz said the following two seasons deteriorated due to growing misunderstandings inside the team.

According to Małysz, the biggest problem was communication. Athletes felt Thurnbichler changed his mind too often, while the coach argued he was reacting in real time and that jumpers didn’t share their problems openly. Małysz said he urged Thurnbichler to be the first to “reach out” and rebuild dialogue.

With Maciej Maciusiak now in charge, Małysz sees clear, positive changes: training energy and motivation are back, the atmosphere is better, and internal communication is smoother. Poland is near the top of the Summer Grand Prix standings, and cooperation within the staff is strong—Kamil Stoch has rejoined the national group while continuing to work with his personal coach Michal Doležal, and the two staffs coordinate well. Małysz also noted improved communication between the federation and the coaching team. He hopes the renewed cohesion translates into results in the winter season, which remains the top priority.
