Janne Ahonen announces: It’s over — his son Mico ends his ski jumping career

Mico Ahonen, the son of Finnish ski jumping legend Janne Ahonen, has announced his retirement from competitive ski jumping. The decision was confirmed by his father in an interview with the Finnish daily Ilta‑Sanomat. According to Janne, Mico had wanted to continue, but he lost motivation after being left out of both Finnish national team squads.
Janne Ahonen expressed disappointment with the federation’s choices, saying the omission was difficult to understand given that Mico had recovered in the spring from a serious knee injury sustained in March 2024 and then posted several encouraging performances.
Born in 2001, Mico grew up in the sport but never reached the heights of his father’s career. He did not win medals at the Junior World Championships and did not break into the front ranks of the Ski Jumping World Cup, competing primarily on the Continental Cup circuit. After rehabilitation from his knee injury, he returned to competition but was unable to match the top athletes.
Janne Ahonen himself remains active in the ski jumping community and even took part in a show event with Toni Nieminen in Lahti earlier this year. The 2025/26 ski jumping season begins on 21 November, but Mico Ahonen will not be on the start list.
