What a night, what a joy for Poles! Kacper Tomasiak and Paweł Wąsek became heroes, sensationally winning the Olympic silver medal in the team/duets event. Immediately after the competition ended, Poland’s most important politicians reacted.
The competition in Predazzo will be remembered for years. Before the third round of the pairs event worsening conditions made fair competition impossible, and the jury cancelled the final jumps — which meant the Poles unexpectedly ended up with a silver medal.
Polish reactions
Right after the decision was announced, the Polish team could hardly contain their joy. Little wonder — if the contest had been finished, it would have been difficult to claim fair conditions for all jumpers in the last attempt. The White-and-Red were among the biggest beneficiaries of the jury’s decision.
Top Polish politicians congratulated the jumpers straight away. Karol Nawrocki and Donald Tusk addressed our representatives, thanking them for the podium on the Olympic hill in Predazzo.
“Finally luck on our side! It’s silver! Bravo Kacper, bravo Paweł!” wrote Donald Tusk.
“One more medal for the White-and‑Reds! Bravo Kacper Tomasiak and Paweł Wąsek! Congratulations,” added Karol Nawrocki.
Although the prime minister and the president (or head of the Polish Olympic/Polish sports body) stand on different sides of the political spectrum, it is unsurprising that on an occasion like this both congratulated the national team.
The pairs competition in Predazzo was the last highlight of the ski jumping programme at the Olympic Games.
