"Yesterday I was shattered. This situation knocked me down, I won't hide it," Paweł Wąsek said bluntly. The Pole, after Saturday's disqualification, turned up at Bergisel on Sunday — but as a trial jumper — and revealed details of another check on the hill.

The day before he became the first athlete in history to receive a surprising disqualification for the use of fluorine. Despite that, on Sunday he appeared at Bergisel as a forerunner. Earlier, during a special procedure, his skis — like those of the rest of the squad — were checked once again.

Wąsek reveals the background to the repeat check

"Yesterday we didn't know where it came from. Today the skis were checked again and it turned out that a specific wax was to blame, which most likely was faulty already from production. After the first test today the result was again positive. Then the skis were taken by the service man and he cleaned them so that the fluorine would no longer be present. They were sent for testing again and the result was negative. Mathias Hafele took the wax they had been lubricated with and performed another test. Again the result was positive, so although we know the reason —" Wąsek described the behind-the-scenes of the whole episode.

"When something goes wrong, it all goes wrong step by step. I'm very sorry that because of such a stupid thing I earned a yellow card and couldn't compete on a hill that I actually like," he said. Our jumper said plainly that he feels wronged. "No one will give the contest back and apologies won't return anything to me. I lost a start and that's what hurts the most," we heard.
