Planica ski flying hill to be rebuilt to enable new world record attempts

Slovenia has given the green light and funding to expand the ski flying hill in Planica, aiming to enable even longer jumps and potential new world records. About €2.69 million has been allocated for the project, with completion planned by November 2027.
The current official ski flying world record was set in March on the present Planica hill, when local star Domen Prevc reached 254.5 meters. After the rebuild, designers expect that jumps of up to approximately 270 meters could be feasible.
The story also references the unofficial best mark of 291 meters, achieved by Japan’s Ryoyu Kobayashi in April 2024 on a temporary, non‑sanctioned hill in Iceland—therefore not recognized as an official record.
Planica is one of the sport’s most iconic venues and regularly hosts top‑level international competitions, including World Cup and championship events. The planned modifications are intended to keep the hill at the forefront of ski flying and to push the limits of the sport in a controlled and sanctioned environment.
