Poland’s coach swore after a jump in Wisła — here’s why he did it

Poland enjoyed a surprisingly strong World Cup performance in Wisła. Domen Prevc won the event and Ryoyu Kobayashi was second, but after the first round Piotr Żyła sat second and Kacper Tomasiak fifth. Ultimately Tomasiak held on for fifth, Żyła finished seventh, Maciej Kot returned to the points in 14th after years away from the elite, and Paweł Wąsek (25th) and Kamil Stoch (27th) also scored.

Head coach Maciej Maciusiak said the team “needed a contest like this,” especially after a poor Saturday and earlier results this season. He highlighted Tomasiak’s composure under home-crowd pressure, Żyła’s excellent first jump and weaker second, Kot’s encouraging return, and Wąsek’s solidity.

TV cameras caught Maciusiak swearing after one of Wąsek’s jumps. The coach explained the emotion was about the landing telemark: Wąsek can land beautifully, and the day before a better telemark would likely have placed him around 20th instead of outside the points.

Maciusiak added that the squad remained confident and focused on clear post-competition analyses and tasks rather than big speeches. He believes the team can fight with the best, though for now Domen Prevc and Ryoyu Kobayashi are a level above. The lineup for next weekend’s World Cup in Klingenthal will be decided the same evening, with no surprises expected.
