It’s official: Sunday’s World Cup ski jumping in Ruka canceled due to wind; likely makeup in Lahti

Organizers of the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup stop in Ruka officially canceled Sunday’s competition after failing to find any safe weather window. Persistent strong and variable winds had disrupted the entire weekend.
On Friday, training was halted after 25 jumps, followed by an hour-long delay before the entire day’s program was scrapped. Saturday went ahead only partially: training, qualification, and the first competition round were completed, but the second round was stopped after eight jumps due to wind, with results from the first round declared final.
On Sunday morning, qualifying scheduled for 09:00 was canceled, and worsening winds led officials to rule out holding the 14:50 competition. The situation was deemed unsafe for athletes. The decision deadline was moved to 15:30, but jumping was called off well before that time.
World Cup director Sandro Pertile told Eurosport that the chance of any jumping on Sunday was “very small” and that FIS had already discussed with the Finnish federation moving the extra competition to Lahti in March. Eurosport’s studio reported the same, noting the contest will most likely be added to the Lahti weekend.
Ruka has a history of weather-related disruptions, and last year’s event was also shortened to one round. This time, however, Sunday’s competition could not be held at all.
