With a surprising result the women's ski jumping World Cup opened the new year in Oberstdorf. Canada's Abigail Strate won Thursday's competition — her first World Cup victory — ahead of China's Zeng Ping, who on her 21st birthday claimed a historic first World Cup podium for China. German Selina Freitag finished third, Slovenia's Nika Prevc was fourth and — by virtue of the combined Two‑Nights results — secured the overall Two‑Nights Tour victory.

Austrian Lisa Eder from Salzburg was the best ÖSV athlete on the day, placing seventh. She jumped 119 m and 114 m and missed second place by only 3.3 points; in the Tour overall she finished fourth with 494.3 points, just 0.6 points off the podium.

Difficult and changeable wind conditions made judging the jumps tricky. Prevc had struggled in the first round (just making the final with a 105 m jump) but produced the longest jump in round two (128.5 m) to move up to fourth with a total of 256.6 points. By winning the Two‑Nights Tour for the third time she amassed 527.7 points overall, ahead of Selina Freitag (505.3) and Japan's Nozomi Maruyama (496.9).

Strate dominated the Oberstdorf competition with jumps of 136 m and 116 m for 268.2 points. Zeng Ping scored 257.7 (126.5 / 126.5) and Freitag 257.3 (128 / 118).

Other Austrian results: Upper Austrian Julia Mühlbacher placed 13th (120 / 116 m, 241.1 points). Chiara Kreuzer and Hannah Wiegele failed to qualify, as had happened the day before.

The Two‑Nights Tour — held on the German hills in Garmisch‑Partenkirchen and Oberstdorf — was staged for the third time this season; it is planned to be replaced next year by a women's Four Hills Tournament format.
